Awesome!
You’ve peeked behind the curtain and found out about all the opportunity to make money online and you started your own website but after a while, you started to get discouraged.
It’s been months and you haven’t made a single sale. You don’t even have people visiting your website daily.
This might seem like a terrible situation but before you think about quitting I want to say that I was in the exact same situation. I realised later than I wished I would that there were a few reasons why I didn’t make any money.
In this post I'll share with you all these reasons.
1. You Are Not Making Any Money Online Because You’re Expecting Success Too Soon
Before you started you probably saw some YouTube videos or read the sales letter of a make money online product and they gave the impression that you would start making money in 3 months.
The sales letters won’t say it directly but they’re crafted in a way that you’ll come to that conclusion.
It’s rare that people succeed in making money so realize that all the time you put into it is worth it. Most people quit after 3 months then there’s a group that’ll quit after 6 months than most of the time you have the last batch that quits after a year.
Most people I know that survived for over year changed their mindset from I want to earn money as soon as possible so I’m going to keep working till I succeed.
Of those people, I don’t know any that didn’t succeed.
Quick Tip
The quickest I have seen someone succeed in affiliate marketing was two weeks but he worked +80 hours a week and had to go to the hospital after that because he didn't take care of his health.
This definitely in an outlier but I do know a lot of other people that succeeded and they all had one thing in common.
They all thought the same thing I'm going to keep working till I succeed.
Adopt this mentality and you'll be alright.
2. You Are Not Making Any Money Online Because You’re Targeting The Wrong People
This is a mistake that I kept repeating for a long time. I remember when I started my website and I promoted a product that helps you with creating a blog and making money from it.
I thought about targeting my friends on Facebook and Instagram because I had their trust so they knew everything I offer would be legit.
The problem was I had everything need to sell products to them but one thing…
Their Interest!
They just weren’t interested in what I was selling. So I’d advise you to only target people that are interested and (this is important) have already decided that they want to buy a product.
Quick Tip
People ready to buy are looking for content like :
- Content targeting buyer keywords
Examples: Laptops under 1000 dollars, fitness equipment for sale, cheap headphones, etc. - Product reviews
- Product comparisons
You’ll get sales once you stop trying to convince people to buy things and simply guide the people that do want to buy a product.
3. You Are Not Making Any Money Online Because Your Copy Stinks
This is probably one of the most frustrating things that can happen to you if you don’t know how to fix it. You might have a lot of website visitors but the moment they are on your website they leave within 15 seconds.
You need to understand that effective copywriting is about saying the right stuff and leaving out the things that might hurt your sales.
Read books about copywriting and study successful websites and try to find out why they wrote things the way they did with the theory you learned from copywriting books.
Quick Tip
To make a sale you need to insert these components in your copy:
- Well presented benefits
- Credibility
- Trust
- Relatability
- Scarcity
- and more.
All these things need to be conveyed in the copy on your website.
4. You Are Not Making Any Money Online Because Of A Lack of Consistency
Consistency is the main thing that separates those who succeed from those who don’t. There’s no such thing as an overnight success when it comes to the things that are worth putting your time and energy in.
When you think about it at first it sucks that you consistently have to put in the work but it has two huge advantages.
- It limits competition
The moment something is hard people often will quit or don’t even try to do it. This means once you get through the timespan where everybody quits there are only a few people that can truly be seen as your competition. - You’ll stay on top
It takes a lot of work to succeed but it’ll also take a lot of work to stay on top. By being consistent for a long time you’ll create the habits that make it possible for you to stay on top.
Quick Tip
Treat your online business like a job.
- Create deadlines
- Have a work schedule
- Hold yourself accountable
This isn't a hobby. It's a legitimate business.
5. You Are Not Making Any Money Online Because You’re not getting the proper training
Take this from someone who used to be very stubborn and thought he could do it all by himself. You won’t ever make money online consistently if you don’t receive the proper training. It’s not going to happen.
I wasted probably 4 months because I thought some YouTube videos was all I needed to succeed in online marketing.
You’ll have to get the proper training. By doing that you won’t have the wrong expectations, put your energy in the wrong things and only work on the tasks that make a big impact.
Quick Tip
There are a lot of online marketing training platforms that you can join and learn everything about creating website and making money online.
On this website I've review multiple of them such as:
You can thank me later 😉
6. You Are Not Making Any Money Online If You Keep Switching To The New Shiny Object
The moment I stopped doing this was the moment I started making progress. I remember being in the middle of one thing and the moment I hit a roadblock I might see this new opportunity and jump on that.
This a result of having a bad mentality towards making money online. It’s not going to be a smooth process in a lot of situations you’re going to have to become a problem solver because that new shiny object will also have a few roadblocks in its process.
Continuously jumping to the new shiny object is a great way to make sure you won’t make any money.
7. Your Not Making Any Money Online Because You Aren’t Surrendering To The Process
The moment you have received the proper training do everything the way they say it. Don’t look for the easy way out because there is no easy way out. When I started this blog, people advised me to go put out content at least four times a week and if possible daily.
After 4 months I posted two times a week and was a model of inconsistency. I knew I’d have to post more but I was resisting the process than I started to see all these people that started at the same time and often have lower quality posts than mine progress more.
So I asked them what they were doing and guess what they answered…
“…Upload 4 to 7 times a week consistently…”
You might not like it but accept the process for what it is and start doing what is needed and you’ll get where you want to be.
Quick Tip
Like a wise man that saved the planet from te decepticons would say:
Just do it!!!!!!!
8. Your Not Making Any Money Online Because You’re Doing Too Much
It’s easy to become overenthusiastic when you find out there’s a way to make money online. When I started I posted native content on every social platform and did everything but writing the content that would rank my website content in search engines.
I spread myself too thin!
Doing too much is a great way to get nothing done. It’s smarter to focus on the things that are within your strengths and make the biggest impact.
This might not be the trendy thing that gets a lot traffic quick but it’ll increase your chances at success way more because you’re producing quality content on a select couple of platforms instead of posting mediocre content on all of them.
9. Your Not Making Any Money Online Because You Don’t Keep Your Target Audience In Mind
“…You can have everything in life you want if you will just help other people get what they want…” — Zig Ziglar
This quote contains everything you need to make money online. It’s not about what you’ll receive but what you can give. I know this sounds corny but if you can’t look at things from your target audience their perspective you won’t earn a dime.
- Is there any value in your content or are you just putting out offers?
- How is the user experience of your website? Do website visitors like it.
- How can you present your product offers in a way that appeals to your target audience?
- How can I give more to my target audience?
These are the questions you should be asking yourself because it’s not about you it’s about your audience.
Quick Tip
A great way to view things from the perspective of your target audience is to create customer avatars.
These are fictional people that are a part of your target audience. Try to go as deep as possible when it comes to how they think, what they're influenced by and create conten specifically for these avatars.
10. You Are Not Making Any Money Online Because You’re Afraid To Ask
This is a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. It’s a good thing because you’re aware that your offers might be seen as spam. It’s a bad thing because nobody is going to give away their money if they aren’t asked.
I personally use the jab, jab, jab, right hook method from Gary Vaynerchuk. The jabs are basically free value nuggets that I use to set up the right hook which is the call to action.
The moment you give a lot of value beforehand you shouldn’t be afraid of bothering your website visitors or coming off too salesy.
If you do this right instead of your audience thinking this is spam they might think of something along the line of:
“…If the free content has this much value already than the paid content must have even more value…”
Even after this, you’ll still need to ask.
11. You Are Not Making Any Money Online Because There’s Too Much Competition
Before you pick a niche to sell products to it’s important that you do some research about the niche beforehand.
Selling products is a lot easier when you’re an authority in your niche. The moment there are too many people in your niche trying to do the same your message might get lost within the noise.
Try to pick a niche that is profitable but isn’t too competitive.
Quick Tip
To me, the perfect niche has less than 100 niche websites.
This way you know it’s profitable because a lot of people are in that niche but there aren’t so many websites that you can’t stand out.
A great way to find out if you have a good niche is to use a keyword research tool.
12. You aren’t building quality links
There was a time when you could easily rank for keywords without link building but now a lot of people are actively building links which means you have to keep up.
Start guest posting, create content people want to link to, look for broken links on websites that your content can replace.
You don’t need a lot of links. 5 quality links often are more than enough to rank on the first page of search engines for long tail keywords.
Quick Tip
In my resources section I have a free backlink checker that you can use to find out where your competitors got their backlinks from.
Reach out to those websites and find out if you can get backlink by using one of the methods I mentioned above.
13. You aren’t taking advantage of your analytics
Did you know you can track the performance of your website with Google Analytics and Search Console?
While Google analytics looks at traffic coming in from all mediums Search Console is focused on traffic coming from Google’s organic rankings.
When having troubles with traffic and conversion you can see exactly where the problem lies and fix it.
Final Words
Making money online is hard and even if you know the reason you aren't making any money online chances are it's still going to take a long time.
Be prepared and don't give up!
