How do keywords work? Find out right now!

You’ve set up a website and have some great content, but nobody is visiting your website.
You hear all these people on forums and websites like wealthy affiliate talk about marketing using
keywords and you might wonder. How do keywords work?

I’m about to show you that right now.
We’ll be talking about:

  • What a keyword is
  • Why keywords are important
  • How to do keyword research
  • How to choose keywords for your content
  • How you get ranked under keywords in google
  • When you should start doing keyword research

What are keywords?

Oxford dictionary describes a keyword as a word or concept of great significance.
Even though keywords are very important in the Search engine optimization space
we signed a different meaning to it.

A keyword is a term that describes the content of a webpage. They are intended
as shortcuts that sum up the entire text for people that don’t want to read the entire text.

They can be one word or a combination of words which we call a long tail keyword.

Why are keywords important?

Search engines like Google, Bing & Yahoo uses these keywords to index websites
and rank them. Depending on your ranking people might click on your website.

In other words keywords indirectly bring people to your website.
What you need to keep in mind is that not all keywords are created equal.
Every keyword gets a different amount of clicks per day even if they mean the exact same
thing.

For example let’s say we have the word “golfclubs” it will get a different amount clicks than if
you would target the word “golf clubs” with space in between.

Keywords mean clicks, clicks mean traffic, traffic means attention, attention means money!

This is why keyword research is important!

How do you do keyword research?

To find out which keywords are popular you can just type them into google, but this isn’t very efficient
especially when you want them to rank into search engines. So what most people use is software that
can show you all the info you need about a keyword. An example of this is jaaxy which can find information
about keywords in seconds.

You might not have anticipated that you have to do this, but you will benefit from for years to come.

So what do you need to know:

  • The keyword
  • How many people type this keyword into the search engine
  • Estimated amount of clicks you’ll get when targeting these keywords
  • How many websites you’re competing with

Put this information in a spreadsheet so that every time you create content you can look up
which keywords you can use. It takes a lot of time, but is fairly consistent so you won’t be
looking in to the same
keywords every day.

How to choose keywords for your content

Depending on how long your page has been online and how popular it is your
strategy for targeting keywords will vary. Some keywords get a large amount of
clicks daily and it might be really tempting to use those keywords, but this isn’t always the
right thing to do.

Most of the time the popular keywords have a lot of competition. When starting out I’d
suggest starting with less popular keywords. You won’t get as much traffic, but you’ll rank easier
and get your foot in the door.

The bigger your page gets the more you can target keywords that have more competition.

How do you get ranked under keywords?

A lot of people think when you make a website it shows up on google and the
job is done. Your website has to get indexed.

Basically “google robots” will have to find your site. They’ll be searching for
content containing specific keywords. Depending on your content you’ll be ranked
in the search engines under specific keywords.

After hearing this I have to give you a warning.

Don’t Keyword spam your webpages!

This will only have the opposite effect. Keyword spamming will only cause that
the quality of your content will decline. Search engines see quality of the content
a high priority and will not rank you if you do that.

I’d advise you to use the keyword as a topic or a subtopic and create quality content
around it.

When is it time to start doing keyword research?

Honestly I’d start with this as soon as possible maybe even before you start your page.
There are a lot of instances where people even choose the niche of their website through
keyword research.

I wouldn’t do that, because if you aren’t interested in the topic it’s going to be real hard to work
on it every day. I would look for a middle way where you look at your hobbies and interests and see
which one would probably produce the most popular keywords.

The truth is the longer you wait with keyword research the longer it takes for your content to become
profitable. Just winging it can get you into situations where your not making any money, but could’ve made
a lot more just by using another synonym for a word.

As always I hope this was of value for you.

Let me know if you have some questions.

I’d appreciate feedback so if you have some leave it in the comments.

There’s a lot of opportunity when it comes to making money online, but all this information
can be overwhelming. It would be easier if there just was this blueprint and some support by experts.
