Udemy, product overview

Udemy is an online platform on which you can buy and sell online courses of a variety of niches and get support from the creators of those courses

Good & The Bad

The good

Pro #1 New courses are being added on a daily basis
There are a lot of platforms that offer online courses but the problem with most of them is that they don’t get updated all the time. The fact that you can become a contributor and earn money making these online courses motivates a lot of people to make new courses and keep the content fresh.

Pro #2 Same structure for all courses
Udemy offers courses that teach you how to create a successful Udemy course. because of that a lot of the online courses on Udemy have the same simple structure. This makes it easier to get through all the content and if you only need specific modules of the course you know exactly where to find them.

Pro #3 You can make money on Udemy
I’ve said this when mentioning my first pro. You can make money with Udemy. You can do this in two different ways. You can become what Udemy calls a contributor and make online courses that you can sell on the platform or you can join the Udemy affiliate program and get paid commission for everyone that you refer to Udemy.

The bad

Con #1 No advanced courses
There is a lot of variety when it comes to online courses on Udemy but being with them for more than 4 years I’ve noticed that most of the courses are basic. If you’re new to what you’re trying to learn they are the perfect way to create a foundation to built on but when you’re trying to expand Udemy might not be ideal. This isn’t really a con but it’s obvious Udemy isn’t for everyone.

Con #2 They take an insane large cut of the income
Yes. You can make money by creating online courses with Udemy but a very large percentage of it goes to Udemy. When I first noticed this I thought it was BS, but thinking about it at a later point it was a fair trade. You might create the course, but they supply the traffic source. This might not be ideal for people trying to earn a full time income online.

Con #3 You don’t get access to their customer list
Every good online entrepreneur knows that the real money is in the list. The moment someone buys something from you, you have their trust which makes it easier to make them buy more of your products. Since you don’t have access to their list which is understandable you’re leaving a lot of money on the table.

Who is Udemy for?

Udemy is for everyone that’s trying to learn a skill set with the help of an online course. They have courses in subjects like:

  • languages
  • Business
  • Software design
  • Design
  • Lifestyle
  • Personal development
  • Photography
  • Fitness
  • and much more.

Most of the courses cover the basics and make a good foundation for what you want to learn.

Udemy tools & training

Course search
The course search bar makes it possible to find any course in no time. You can search by category, course name or the name of the creator and get access to a list with all the courses that mention they keywords you typed in the search bar.

My Courses

My courses is basically the dashboard of your account. On this page, you have an overview of the courses you bought and the once you’re aiming to buy. You can access the courses from here, leave comments under the courses, communicate with the creators and receive important announcements.

The Course Player

The course player makes it possible to watch the courses you have purchased. While you’re watching you get an overview of all the modules the course contains and how far you are with the course. You can adjust the speed of the player and also bookmark specific modules in case you want to see them again.

Become an instructor
Udemy provides you with the possibility to make money online by creating online courses. Udemy offers free courses that can help with setting up your own course. The courses contain video’s, educational images, and templates to help you on your way. The instructor dashboard and curriculum pages make sure you stay on track.

Udemy App
The udemy app makes it easier to get access to courses from your mobile phone. It’s fully mobile responsive and provides you with a good user experience.

Affiliate program

Creating and selling courses isn’t the only way to make money on Udemy. You can also apply for the Udemy Affiliate program. You earn money by promoting courses on Udemy and for every sell you receive a commission. Udemy will provide you with promotional tools and assets that’ll help with referring people.

Udemy Support

Support on Udemy
Udemy has divided their support into two categories.

  • Students
People that have questions about the online courses they’ve purchased.
  • Instructor
People that have questions regarding creating their own online courses.

In both categories, it’s possible to directly communicate with the Udemy Support team. You can open a support ticket fill out the form and they’ll help you.

Knowledge base
Udemy also has a small knowledge base containing articles that can help with getting started and most general problems you might face when you are a student or an instructor.

Blog
The Udemy Blog will support you with the latest news surrounding Udemy. They divided the posts on the blog in different categories based on who can benefit from them and more.

The categories are:

  • All
  • Students
  • Instructors
  • Ideas & Opinions
  • Udemy News
  • Udemy for business
  • Social innovation

Udemy price

The prices for the courses are set by the creators themselves but for the most part, they range between 9,99 and 300 dollars. Depending on how much value they provide they’ll be more expensive.

When I started they used to do sales 2 times a year where all the courses where $9,99. Now it looks like they do these kinds of sales almost every 2 months.

My personal take on Udemy

From the perspective of a student
Overall I think Udemy is an excellent platform. The support from Udemy itself is good and the overall user experience of the website makes it easy to get most out of Udemy. A lot of courses are added at almost a daily basis which makes a lot of the content on Udemy close to being evergreen.

After having an account with Udemy for several years it has become clear to me that this isn’t the website for people that are already have considerable knowledge about a subject and are trying to expand that.

I’d recommend it to beginning students.

From the perspective of somebody who wants to make money online
Udemy to me isn’t the most ideal platform to make money. If you’re looking for a quick buck then you can use udemy because they already have a large community that they can market it to. The problem I see is that you’ll get a big boost at the beginning and after that, it dies down.

If you want to create a sustainable business with a stable income you’re going to need to have access to your list and you’re going to need a larger cut of the income.

All in all, you can make some money with Udemy but it won’t make you a millionaire.
