Tim Ferris his career path

Tim Ferris started his career after graduating from Princeton University in the year 2000 where he got an MBA in East Asian Studies.

After graduating he worked as an account manager at True San Networks a start-up that provided enterprise storage networking systems, software, and services.

After a year of working at TrueSan Networks, he founded BodyQuicken LLC ( now known as BrainQuicken) an internet-based sports nutritional supplements company.

He transformed this company from a business that would normally need a time investment of 80 hours a week to a 4-hour-a-week income generator.

In 2006 he launched the Tim Ferriss blog which he credits for the majority of his success in investing and podcasting.

This company would later become the foundation for his first book The 4-hour Work Week which he wrote in 2007.

In The 4-Hour Work Week, he explains how the back end of his company BrainQuicken works and how it frees time for him to do other things.

In 2010, he sold BrainQuicken to a London-based private equity firm for several million dollars.

According to an interview with Inc.com, the company didn’t take a lot of time to operate but it was constantly on his mind which was mentally taxing.

After The 4-Hour Work Week, he wrote 4 other books that just like The 4-Hour Work Week became New York Times Best Sellers.

From 2010 up to 2018 he invested in multiple start-ups such as Trippy and TaskRabbit.

During that time he also started a Podcast called the Tim Ferriss Show which has over 900 Million downloads.

He also went into the TV world and produced shows such as 2013’s Tim Ferriss Experiment and 2017’s Fear(less) with Tim Ferriss.

At the moment, both the blog and the podcast are still running.

Below is a 3-minute snippet from the Tim Ferriss Show.

Skills Tim Ferris has acquired over the years

Acquiring a net worth of $100 million dollar isn’t something you can do easily. It requires hard work, patience, skills, knowledge, and great timing.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Tim Ferriss is a man that has all of this but what exactly are these skills and knowledge that he has acquired over the years?

On his LinkedIn page, he has mentioned some of his capabilities and areas he has knowledge about. Let’s go through them to get more insight into what it’d take to have success similar to Tim Ferriss.

1. Blogging

The first skill mentioned is Blogging with +40 endorsements.

A lot of people think blogging is dead but according to statistics, 77% of marketers of marketers report that content marketing has become more important to their organization in the last year (Content Marketing Institute).

Also, 80% of bloggers report that blogging drives results (Orbit Media).

Traffic from blogs can easily be converted to money through advertisement, affiliate marketing, email marketing, or driving it to courses. I’m sure with more than 160.000 visitors he’s making a lot of money.

Tim Ferriss about the importance of his blog

Tim Ferriss talking about the importance of his blog.

As someone who owns multiple blogs and created my first blog in 2016, I can confidently say the “trick” to creating a successful blog is researching what your niche wants to see and providing them with that.

This means researching search activity, and social media engagement, analyzing competition, and learning how to create quality content.

Most people tend to create a blog website and just start writing without an actual strategy. They aren't taking advatantage of Blogging lead generation strategies.

I can guarantee you that successful bloggers such as Tim Ferriss put a lot of thought into what they choose to publish.

2. Entrepreneurship/ Start-ups

The second skill named is listed as entrepreneurship.

Tim has created and been involved in multiple start-ups and enormous enterprises so he knows exactly what works and what doesn’t.

According to people like Gary Vaynerchuk, entrepreneurship isn’t really something you need to learn through traditional schooling and Tim Ferriss is proof of that.

It takes a lot of experimenting, patience, pivoting, and the willingness to make mistakes.

Interning at companies can be a great way to start learning about entrepreneurship but if I could advise anything that’s close to a guide it’d be the book The Lean Start-up.

The book written by Eric Ries details the process successful startups often take to get to where they’re at.

He advises you to stop romancing your idea of entrepreneurship and pivot fast and often when needed.

3. Marketing

+45 endorsements have been given about Tim Ferriss and his knowledge about Marketing.

It’s arguably one of the most important skills needed to be successful in any entrepreneurial endeavor. You might have the best product in the world but if no one knows it exists you won’t earn a penny.

Looking at his content a combination of SEO, Email Marketing, and Social Media Marketing has been used for the promotion of his blog, podcast, and books.

It is also a key component when building an audience.

The skill of getting eyes on your content is a valuable one to either have in your toolkit or have someone you delegate it to.

3. Business Planning

Tim Ferriss has 15 endorsements on Linkedin for his knowledge of business planning.

It’s great to have a dream about building a business but without an actual strategy, the chance of it materialising is small. According to statistics about business failure, the biggest group fails because of the following reasons:

  • 38% ran out of cash
  • 35% No market need
  • 19% Flawed business model

These all in some sort of way fall under business planning. Getting prior experience by working for start-ups can help a lot but finding a solid course can also help with listing everything needed to create a great business plan.

4. Teaching

Effectively sharing knowledge through communication is something Tim Ferris is very capable of. Most of his books are entertaining but their first goal is to educate.

If it’s learning how to build a 4-hour per week business or lose fat rapidly it wouldn’t be possible without his ability to teach.

To become a best-selling author knowing how to sell a book is important but it’s hard to sell something that doesn’t bring value to the potential customer. The value in the majority of the books is the transfer of knowledge from Tim to his readers.

5. Public Speaking

Tim Ferriss has been invited to do keynotes for years now and is estimated to earn +$100.000 per event. This wouldn’t be possible without having public speaking skills.

This is one of the skills best learned while doing but there are methods to improve your public speaking.

I have seen people get really good at public speaking after getting into NLP but my advice would be to take a look at courses and record yourself when speaking in public.

It's a great method to see if you can find some blind spots that you can improve on.

These are some of the overarching skills Tim Ferris used to accumulate his net worth of $100 million.

I hope this post was of value and if you have any questions or just want to show some love feel free to leave a comment.
